South Omaha Trail Description

The South Omaha Trail serves as an important connector for the city, linking the Keystone Trail, Karen Park, Karen Western Elementary School and the Field Club Trail. The paved pathway is built on a former Chicago & North Western rail line and has a slight uphill grade when running from west to east.

An old train bridge that crosses S. 60th Street (just south of F Street) has been incorporated into the trail and a considerable amount of wildlife can also be seen from the pathway, including deer, woodchucks and many types of birds.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available on the western end of the trail in Karen Park (6288 H St.).

South Omaha Trail Reviews

Nice Trail

I enjoy the trail, as long as the city keeps the grass/weeds cut. Be on the look out for broken glass in the area near 42nd & D st.
And yes be careful crossing at 50th St...I can say someone runs the light almost everytime I used the lights.
It would be nice if there was a bench between 50th-42nd St.

Updates March 19 2017

1. This trail now connects to the Field Club trail near 35th and Vinton Streets near the many grain silos.
2. There is now a trailhead at 42nd and D Sts. with parking. This is directly across the street from the McDonald's at 42nd/D.
3. I walked it today, but bikers prevail in numbers. The lack of significant scenery seems to fit the bike mode.
4. At the western end of this trail near the Keystone connection, I have seen a flock of turkeys in a forested area with is part of a Kiewit storage site. ( that was 18 months or so ago)
5. Long hills on the eastern half of the trail...

nice trail

I like this trail a lot. it is a comfortable walk with trees along one side. the only wildlife I saw were grasshoppers, crickets, and gnats. I did see one beautiful butterfly. There is a lot of traffic noise from the Interstate, but I could also hear the Papio Creek running beside the trail.

Watch out at 50th Street crossing

Today was the first time I rode this trail. It was great, with the exception of the pedestrian crossing at 50th Street. Both times I crossed (going out and coming back), I pressed the button and waited for my walk sign, but cars blew right by. None of the drivers even saw their red light! You just need to assume that drivers are blind and stupid, which is what I do anyway.

Shaded with mulberries

Rode this trail for the first time on July 14, 2013. Lots of trees to shield you from the wind and provide lots of shade. As a bonus, there are mulberry trees along the way that provide a great snack. Possibly my favorite trail in Omaha.
