Bill Riley Trail Description

The Bill Riley Trail delivers a short but immersive trail experience in a tranquil natural setting. The trail begins at the southern end of the Walnut Creek Trail, and follows the creek into Ashworth Park, a wooded retreat in the city. Cyclists, walkers and users of all types will enjoy the sun-dappled pathway. A rustic trestle bridge carries trail users across Raccoon River, before it connects to the Meredith Trail.

The trail was named for a member of the Des Moines Park Board who played a significant role to raise funds for the city’s trail system.

Parking and Trail Access

There is a trailhead at the pool near the Ashworth Memorial Pool in Ashworth Park (4500 Grand Avenue). There are picnic facilities and a playground but there are no restrooms there.

Bill Riley Trail Reviews

Short trail but an important link to other trails

I started in greenwood park. This trail is short but connects to other trails in the area. I only rode a short portion because I wanted to connect to the walnut creek trail. It is thru the woods and a pleasant ride. I rode August 2019. The trail is smooth. There are benches along the trail. There were no bugs. There was an order of something in the woods that may have been dead but it wasn't that noticeable. The humidity was high but temps were nice upper 60's-low 80's the day I rode. I didn't see any wildlife.
