Principal Riverwalk Description

To the residents of Lastrobe, the Lincoln Avenue Rails to Trails Greenway is more than a simple off-road path: it also a social asset, a place where community members of all ages and walks of life can interact. The shared use pathway is a part of the initiative to turn Lincoln Avenue into a Complete Street: streets designed to accommodate a variety of users and uses, both motorized and non-motorized. The pathway is the non-motorized part of that equation, accommodating walkers, joggers, dog-walkers, roller-skaters and so on on the 8-10 ft wide asphalt surface.

The rail-trail is 1.5 miles long, paralleling Lincoln Avenue from its intersection with State Route 981 (Depot Street) to State Route 982 (Hillview Avenue). It’s built on the rail bed of the abandoned Ligoner Vallery Railroad, which used to connect to the Pennyslvania Railroad mainline through the City of Latrobe. Bioswales and rain gardens planted along the trail enhance the natural beauty while providing sustainable ways to manage stormwater runoff. Street furniture (benches, trash receptacles) dot the trailside. The trail passes through a number of neighborhoods, transitioning into more commercial and industrial areas along the southern half of the trail. Crossings are at grade but as a precaution, there are bollards and stop signs for trail users.
