Valley View Trail Description

The Valley View Trail spans the eastern side of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passing close to residential neighborhoods, retail hubs, parks and rural areas. Along the way, trail users can read historical markers for the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, which traces the route of the Mormon emigration from the Midwest in the mid-1800s.

A number of schools are linked by the Valley View Trail; in fact, the trail runs directly through the campuses of Lewis Central High School, Lewis Central Middle School and the Iowa School for the Deaf. Titan Hill Intermediate School and College View Elementary School are also located on or near the trail, making the route a safe option for biking or walking student commuters.

The trail formerly ended at Iowa Western Community College on College Road in the northern section of Council Bluffs, but a recent extension added paved trail north to US 6 along Indian Hills Road. Near the trail's midpoint, short spurs take trail users to the large Mall of the Bluffs shopping center on Mall Drive and Valley View Park (via a short pedestrian bridge over Mosquito Creek) just a couple blocks north.

In the south, the Valley View Trail links directly with the Lake Manawa Trail at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park, providing a direct off-road route to popular Lake Manawa State Park. The same trailhead also features the northern endpoint for the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, which runs 63 miles south from Council Bluffs to the Iowa–Missouri border.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Valley View Trail can be found at its southern endpoint at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park on E. South Omaha Bridge Road. If you plan on starting your trip in the residential section of Council Bluffs, consider parking at Valley View Park on Franklin Avenue.
