Print Friendly MapThis 2.1-mile long paved path runs directly adjacent to (about 30-40 feet off of) the Boulevard in Mountain Lakes, NJ, and follows the exact route of a former trolley line operated by the Morris County Traction Company.
While more similar to a sidewalk than a traditional off-road rail-trail, this path still provides an ideal surface and a safe alternative away from motor vehicles for walkers, runners, bicyclists, in-line skaters and the disabled.
In addition to being a great place to exercise, the path serves as a history tour. It has breathtaking views of the many Colonial, Georgian and Spanish-style homes which are on the Boulevard, many with lawns that reach back to the lakes that give the borough of Mountain Lakes its name.
The pathway is known as a cool place in the hot summer months, with its large old shade trees, along with towering rhododendrons and mountain laurel, offering plenty of shade.
From Rt. 80 West, get off at Cherry Hill Rd. Take that to Rt. 46 and go left (west). Go up to the second light and turn right. The trail starts at the first light across from the firehouse.
You can park at a small lot near the intersection of Boulevard and Lake Drive, near the episcopal church. You might be able to park at the church at the intersection of Boulevard and Pocono Drive, at St. Catherine's Church. You can also park legally in parking lots or along side streets in the surrounding neighborhoods.
The trail is good and scenic with moderate inclines/declines but the biggest issue is proximity to a busy road along with constant crossing of driveways and roads making it quite dangerous for small kids who don’t pay attention. Park at the St Catherine’s church’s parking but crossing the street itself is a bit risky with small kids.
At the end of the trail is a Kings supermarket with awesome sandwiches and more.
The trail borders the Boulevard in Mountain Lakes, where you meet bicyclers, joggers, walkers, and their dogs. There is a playground and beach just across the Boulevard. If you want a more "woodsy" trail, stop in to the town hall (behind the fire station) and ask for a trail map. Mountain Lakes has quite a trail system, with some trails connecting to the trail system in the Tourne (Morris County Park).
This is a great trail for kids. Short enough and mostly flat. I a nice day there can be a lot of foot traffic but the trail is wide.
I suggest you park in the church parking lot at the southern end of the trail. There is plenty of room there to unload and prepare the kids.
My wife and I rode this "trail" in April this year. There is a playground halfway bordering a lake that you can visit. As others have said, its like a big sidewalk - that said we had a nice warmup and it was interesting.

"The paved surface of the Boulevard Trolley Line Path is quite smooth. I inline skate there year round, after the usual seasonal surface clean up. Note the big hill in the middle of the path. The many cross streets keeps one on their toes. It's an enjoyable community."
" This trail is wide, well paved and well used. The homes, the lakes, and the plants and trees make this a pleasant and interesting walk/ride/skate. The grade is gently rolling and shade is plentiful. This is one of the few trails on which snow is removed in the winter.
All-in-all this is a nice little trail.
