The Dunes Kankakee Trail is a 5.5-mile walking and bike path that It exists in 2 discrete segments: one that is 2.4 miles paralleling County Road 25 East, and the other segment east of that that is 3.1 miles which begins in the Indiana Dunes State Park and travels south to Chesterton, intersecting with the Prairie-Duneland Trail. The two segments are connected by the Calumet Trail, which is also in the state park. This creates over 20-miles of trail from Michigan City to Hobart. This trail will also eventually go south to the Kankakee River and then travel west from Kouts to Hebron. The network of trails in this region connects many communities and is a great recreational tool for both visitors and residents. The closing of a few gaps in this area will allow for a seamless travel to and beyond the Illinois state line into Chicago.
