The Iron Horse Heritage Trail in Portage, Indiana, runs for over 2 miles between Max Mochal Road (SR 149) at the east end and Hamstrom Rd. at the west end. The trail passes through a greenway corridor among suburban back yards, though with a decidedly rural feel. Much of the route is wooded, and the trail provides access to Imagination Glen Park and Woodland Park.

Just west of the eastern end point at SR 149, you can take a spur trail south to link with the Prairie Duneland Trail

Parking and Trail Access

Park at Imagination Glen Park (2275 McCool Road). There is off-road parking (no designated lot) by Woodland Park between Willowcreek Road and Portage Avenue and parking at the BMX track off SR 149.

Iron Horse Heritage Trail Reviews

Very nice connecter trail

Well maintained forested trail connecting to the prairie dune land trail. Relatively flat and straight, the trail is forest covered and goes in short part through a subdivision where it is not marked that it continues after a short street ride. As mentioned, a short trail but if in the area worth biking.

Short but Sweet

The Iron Horse trail has a very nice section on old rail bed, crossing a bridge and along the section of a lake.

Then it turns and leaves you in a subdivision with no markings.

The subdivision sidewalk is double wide on the left, follow this wider path and it will turn back into the woods at the end of the street.
The trail runs another mile and ends at Portage road.

We rode the Prairie Duneland trail and added the Iron Horse for a total 25 mile ride

Rode to day - lovely trail

Beautiful

It was a nice trail once I found it. Takes you thru a few subdivisions which us ok but once back on the trail there is a hairpin turn that could send you over a cliff if your going fast. Connects to Prairie Duneland trail. Overall a scenic ride.

Phase 1 Spring 07'

Spring of 2007 will mark the completion of the first phase of the Iron Horse Trail project and will cover roughly 2 miles. Eventually the trail will be developed to the city's western border and then make a bee line directly to Lake Michigan and the park departments new lakefront park. This will be one of the most exciting trail opportunities in Indiana if not the midwest once completed.

Good workout

"This trail isn't built yet, just the tracks removed. The trail is gravel and sand, the sand is the hardest to get through. By the end of this short 5 mile trek you'll feel it! The trail also connects to the trails at Imagaination Glen Park and if you go down the road a little ways you can link up with the Praire Duneland Trail."

Great trail

Great trail. Lots to keep you busy and it's very clean!
