Constructed in a lovely corridor that runs in between suburban neighborhoods in West Des Moines, the Ashawa Greenway Trail offers a short but pleasant paved path that serves both as a means of recreation, and a convenient connection for residents to the schools and city government facilities located at its eastern end.
Beginning off of 50th Street, which has a spacious sidepath on the western side of the road that can take you up to the seven-mile Jordan Creek Trail, the Ashawa Greenway Trail heads east in a tree-lined space in between the backyards of the adjoining homes. The trail follows a little waterbed that helps give the route a scenic impression, despite its location in the middle of suburbia, and winds through the city's Ashawa Park. The park offers a host of fields and playgrounds for outdoor activities, making this a popular spot for families from the local neighborhoods. Making use of a convenient underpass, the trail ends at the complex where city hall, the public library, and a trio of schools are located - the Mills Civic Parkway Trail intersects with the trail.
Parking and restrooms are available in Ashawa Park, on Waterford Drive just north of Mills Civic Parkway. Additional parking may be available in the lots for city hall or the public library; be sure to follow any posted parking signs or regulations. To reach Ashawa Park from Interstate 35, take exit 70 and head east on Mills Civic Parkway, then turn left onto Waterford Drive.
