The Heart of the Warrior Trail runs east-west through Waukee, a small city in the Greater Des Moines area. On its east end, the trail begins in Lions Park. Here, it connects to the popular Clive Greenbelt Trail, which provides access to numerous parks along its route and ties into the extensive multi-use trail system in the area.
From the park, the paved pathway heads west through residential neighborhoods. Note that there is little shade along the trail. About mid-trail, you'll approach Ashworth Drive, which you can cross (though there is no crosswalk) to reach Centennial Park. If you take this spur, you'll pass Waukee Middle School to reach the 33-acre park, where you'll find parking, picnic tables, volleyball and basketball courts, playgrounds, and many other recreational amenities.
Back on the trail, you'll continue northwest, passing the smaller Windfield Park with restrooms, a playground, and picnic tables. At 6th Street, the trail turns due north, paralleling the roadway, to its end at Hickman Road and a connection to the Raccoon River Valley Trail, which offers more than 80 miles of trail.
Parking can be found on the east end of the trail in Waukee's Lions Park. Near the midpoint of the trail, you can find parking at Centennial Park (1255 Warrior Lane) and Windfield Park (114 Windfield Parkway).
We live in SE Waukee and use this trail to literally ride from our home and get on the RRVT for many more miles of riding.
