Helping to connect three of the city of West Des Moines' public parks - and allowing residents to access the parks safely via bike or on foot - the Knolls Greenway Trail provides a nice recreational path right in the middle of a heavily residential area in the suburban community. From the trail's southern end, a short trek down the wide sidepath along 50th Street takes you into Jordan Creek Park and the accompanying Jordan Creek Trail, a seven-mile path that spans the length of the city. The trail passes through Knolls Park, a cute neighborhood space with a playground and small picnic area, and continues north through the adjoining neighborhoods. An underpass brings you into Crossroads Park, which despite being located next to the busy interstate serves as a great amenity, providing ample open space, tennis courts, and a skatepark. The trail comes to an end right next to a local elementary school, giving neighborhood families a great way to get to school or the parks; the sidepath on 50th Street also continues north, providing access over the interstate exchange.
Parking is available at the southern end of the trail in Jordan Creek Park, on 50th Street just south of the railroad tracks. Parking and restrooms are available at Crossroads Park on the trail's northern end, off of Ashworth Road just east of the highway overpass, several blocks west of 50th Street.
