McVay Trail Description

The 1.6-mile McVay Trail in Indianola provides a paved route for cyclists, walkers and joggers between East 5th Street and Pickard Park. The trail follows the bed of the former Chicago, Burlington and Quincy (CB&Q) railroad and is flanked with trees. The trail was named for Ira B. McVay, the first landowner of the railroad right-of-way, which he purchased from the US government in 1851.

At 15th Street the trail crosses the road and heads south to E. 2nd Ave/Rout 92. From here it head east to Pickard Park. At the 5th Street end, you can cross the street to pick up the Summerset Trail and head north all the way up to Carlisle (and when future trails are finished, you can continue the rest of the way into Des Moines). Alternatively, the Jerry Kelley Trail provides a means of heading west through Indianola to check out some of the city's charming local parks and arboretum.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at Pickard Park, 1468 Hwy 92 East and at the N. 5th Street terminus.
