Located just over thirty miles east of Des Moines, the small city of Newton boasts a charming midwestern feel - and complementing the city's charm is the lovely Newton Hike and Bike Trail, which provides a great way for cyclists, runners, and pedestrians to get out and explore the community. The trail is built in several disconnected segments, with signed bike routes and sidewalks connecting between them, and takes trail users across the city and through many of the local parks and nature areas.
Some sections of the trail offer excellent, tree-lined corridors that allow you to disappear into the natural surroundings, while other sections are much more utilitarian, functioning as wide sidepaths along the city streets. Regardless, the trail makes for a useful means of traversing around the edges of the city, providing ample opportunity for recreation and exercise along the trail at Maytag Park, Agnes Patterson Memorial Park, and Woodland Park. The city is working on further developing the trail to make it a complete loop, with trails leading to destinations in the interior near downtown, but for now, residents and visitors can enjoy what the existing trail has to offer.
Parking and restrooms are available along the trail at Agnes Patterson Memorial Park, located off of 3000 N 4th Avenue E. Parking is also available at Aurora Park, on S 2nd Avenue E between E 21st Street and E 23rd Street. Additional parking and restrooms are available at Maytag Park, at 301 S 11th Avenue W.
