Canal Hike and Bike Trail Description

The 4.9-mile Canal Hike and Bike Trail runs underneath and alongside the I-135 Canal Route, starting at E. 17th Street N. (at McAdams Park) and heading south to Stafford Street (just north of Pawnee). Use caution as the path has several street crossings. Users can access the Bicycle Skill and Safety course in North Linwood Park, and there are many other nearby picnic and recreational opportunities.

At its northern end at 17th Street, the Canal Hike and Bike Path now connects seamlessly to the McAdams Bike Path. That trail extends east, eventually meeting the K-96 Bicycle Path at N. Oliver Avenue. Together these paths make one of the longest and nicest rides in Wichita, providing a critical and continuous loop through Wichita's neighborhoods and workplaces on the city's east side.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Canal Hike and Bike Trail is available at Linwood Park on S. Kansas Street and McAdams Park on E. 14th Street N.

Canal Hike and Bike Trail Reviews

Sorry this guy is so fearful

Rode this trail this morning - it's weird under the expressway, but a great use of urban space. I got bike panhandled for the first time in my riding experience, but geeze, it's in a city, of course you may get panhandled. It does cross busy streets, so I concur, use caution at intersections. But do not ride in fear.

Nice path through some questionable areas

I use this path quite often as it's, essentially, right out my front door. The path, South of Douglas st, through to Pawnee does not cross any roads and goes through city parks. I feel this is the best part of the path. The path, North of Douglas, crosses many streets, is primarily under 135, and passes by/through neighborhoods not known for being safe (People have been robbed on this part of the path. User beware.).

This path connects to the K-96 bike path on the North end (Not shown on traillink.). To do so, Head east on the North end and follow the bike path signs (This will, once again, take you through a questionable area.).

The south end of this path connects to the Gypsum creek path (Connection not shown on traillink.). To do so, cross Pawnee and head west until you come to the bike path which runs alongside George Washington/K15. This path will take you to a pedestrian bridge which crosses I-135. This path will take you through Planeview, which can be a questionable area. The path will end at Oliver, which is where the Gypsum creek path begins.

One can follow the 2nd Street bike path, West to the Arkansas River bike path system as well.

I feel generally safe riding a bike, in a group, at any point through this path. I would not run/walk by myself through all of it (Only the portion aforementioned.). The surface of the path is in great condition.
