I-494 Trail Description

Minnetonka boasts over 90 miles of multi-purpose trails and counting. Located just 8 miles of Minneapolis, this city has a growing network of bike and pedestrian infrastructure knitting it together. The city is home to regional trails and local connectors alike. The I-494 Trail is a shared use path paralleling the interstate that cuts through Minnetonka from north to south, connecting neighborhoods in the north to the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail. The trail begins as an asphalt sidepath on Oakland Road in the north part of the city, but rather than cross over the interstate as Oakland Road does, the trail continues to head directly south along the highway, parallel to a power transmission corridor.

Approaching Stone Road, the trail branches. If you're traveling south, then the branch on the right will lead to Stone Road, where users can connect to a paved pathway crossing under I-494 to Meadow Park. The left branch continues south, over Stone Road and the railroad, and winding through wetland and vegetation to emerge on McGinty Road.

Along McGinty, the trail is a concrete side path, which crosses to the other side of the street at a point, becoming an off-street paved trail until the trail's conclusion on Minnetonka Boulevard, where users can link up to the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail, a 15-mile rail-trail traveling between Hopkins and Victoria.

Parking and Trail Access

There's space to park along McGinty Road, at the bend where it starts paralleling I-494.
