Lake Phalen Trail offers a 3-mile paved loop around a popular lake in St. Paul. The tree-dotted pathway offers views of the lake on one side and pleasant neighborhoods on the other. It is nestled within Phalen Regional Park, which provides parking, restrooms, picnic shelters, a beach, and fishing pier.
At its northern end, the trail connects to the Gateway State Trail and, at its southern end, to the Bruce Vento Trail.
There are several parking lots available in Phalen Regional Park (1600 Phalen Drive). From downtown St. Paul: Take 35E north to Exit 110A for Wheelock Parkway/Larpenteur Avenue. Turn right on Wheelock Parkway and follow it about two miles east to Phalen Drive. Turn left on Phalen and travel north less than 500 feet to one of the park's parking lots. If it happens to be full, you can continue up Phalen Drive to reach the other parking lots.
I love this trail - the scenery is beautiful when you go in the evening. Sunset is so nice. There’s usually a lot of people on trail - lots of families. It’s a great 3-mile walk.
Intermediate-hard trail Overall 3/5 for inline skating! Some parts were very smooth to medium rough. One medium sized hill and one large steep hill. If you aren’t sturdy and balanced enough that fall is going to hurt really bad
Lake Phalen is a beautiful lake+park with events during the year. There’s many trees and pretty wildlife to see around the lake. You could ride the lake every day and not get bored. Has access to the Bruce Vento Regional Trail and the Gateway State Trail with easy accessibility.
This was a very nice trail to bike on. It’s separated most of the way from the walking trail which is nice as I found a lot of people running/walking which would have crowded the trail if it was combined all the way around. There are plenty of different parking places located around the lake for easy access to the trail. Shading around the lake so you aren’t always riding in the sun.
